Toyota Tacoma lug nut torque by year

The 3rd-generation Tacoma (2016–2023) is 83 ft-lb (113 N·m, 11.5 kgf·m), one value for steel and aluminum wheels. The 2nd generation prints 85 ft-lb with the same 113 N·m, and the 1st generation is 83 ft-lb (110 N·m). We have not found a 2024-or-later manual, so this page lists no value for the 4th generation.

Values as printed in the manufacturer’s owner’s manual for the year shown, not converted. Years between two checked manuals of the same generation are assumed to share the value. Open a row to read the exact wording.

What the owner’s manual says

  • Re-check: When installing aluminum wheels, check that the wheel nuts are tight after driving your vehicle the first 1600 km (1000 miles).
  • Re-check: When rotating, repairing or changing your tires, check that the wheel nuts are still tight after driving 1000 miles (1600 km).
  • Threads: Never use oil or grease on the bolts or nuts.
  • Threads: Never use oil or grease on the wheel bolts or wheel nuts.

What the manuals show by generation

The Tacoma’s torque has stayed in a narrow band, but the printed numbers differ by generation:

  • 1st generation (2001–2004 manuals): 110 (11.5, 83), meaning 110 N·m, 11.5 kgf·m and 83 ft·lbf. We checked 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 3.
  • 2nd generation (2005–2015): 113 (11.5, 85) in the 2005, 2006 and 2008 manuals 2.
  • 3rd generation (2016–2023): 83 ft·lbf (113 N·m, 11.5 kgf·m) in the 2018 manual, with the steel 16x7J wheel and the aluminum wheels on one line 1.

The 2nd and 3rd generations share 113 N·m and 11.5 kgf·m but print different ft-lb figures. We list each as printed. Every Tacoma manual we read gives a single value for steel and aluminum wheels. The Tundra is different: since 2007 its steel and aluminum wheels have separate, very different specs.

For the 2024-and-later Tacoma, several charts simply extend the 3rd-generation 83 ft-lb to 2025 and 2026. We have not been able to read a 4th-generation Toyota manual. Toyota offers the 2024 manual only as HTML, and the 2025 and 2026 PDFs are blocked to us and not archived. Until we can, we list no 2024+ value. Use the specifications page in your own owner’s manual. It may list steel and aluminum wheels separately, as the Tundra does.

Re-check and thread condition

The 1st- and 2nd-generation manuals say: “When installing aluminum wheels, check that the wheel nuts are tight after driving your vehicle the first 1600 km (1000 miles)” 2. The 2018 manual says: “When rotating, repairing or changing your tires, check that the wheel nuts are still tight after driving 1000 miles (1600 km).” It also warns “Never use oil or grease on the wheel bolts or wheel nuts” 1. Tighten in a crisscross pattern and finish with a torque wrench (lug nut tightening guide).

Years we have not checked

Only the 2018 manual was available for the 3rd generation. The 2009–2015 2nd-generation manuals were not retrieved, so those years are extended from 2005–2008. No Tacoma owner’s manual lists an oil drain plug or brake caliper torque.
