Chevrolet Equinox lug nut torque by year

The 2018-and-later Equinox is 100 ft-lb (140 N·m), including the 2025 gas model. The value changed inside generations, not just between them. It was 92 ft-lb in 2005, 100 for 2006–2009, 125 ft-lb (170 N·m) in 2010 and 140 ft-lb (190 N·m) for 2011–2017.

Values as printed in the manufacturer’s owner’s manual for the year shown, not converted. Years between two checked manuals of the same generation are assumed to share the value. Open a row to read the exact wording.

What the owner’s manual says

  • Re-check: Stop somewhere as soon as you can and have the nuts tightened with a torque wrench to the proper torque specification.
  • Re-check: The wheel nuts should be tightened with a torque wrench to the proper torque specification after replacing.
  • Threads: Never use oil or grease on studs or nuts. If you do, the nuts might come loose. (PDF p.300)
  • Threads: Never use oil or grease on studs or nuts. If you do, the nuts might come loose. (PDF p.312)
  • Threads: Never use oil or grease on studs or nuts. If you do, the nuts might come loose. (PDF p.412)

Why the Equinox needs a model year

Most vehicles change lug torque at a redesign, if at all. The Equinox changed it four times, twice within a generation:

  • 2005: 92 ft-lb (125 N·m) 6.
  • 2006–2009, same first generation: 100 lb ft (140 N·m) in the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 manuals 7 10.
  • 2010, first year of the second generation: 125 ft lb (170 N·m), from the second printing of the 2010 manual 5.
  • 2011–2017: 140 lb ft (190 N·m) in the 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2017 manuals 3 4.
  • 2018 on (third generation) and the 2025 gas Equinox: back to 100 lb ft (140 N·m) 1 15 2.

The 2010 and 2011 cars are the trap. They share a body, but GM prints 125 for 2010 and 140 for 2011. We list each year as printed and do not extend the 2010 figure to the whole generation. GM’s metric pairing is also its own: 100 lb ft is printed with 140 N·m, so don’t expect a converter to reproduce it.

Moving from a 2011–2017 Equinox to a newer one means dropping the wrench setting, not raising it. The 140 ft-lb from the second generation is well over the 100 ft-lb that GM prints for 2018 and later.

Re-check and thread condition

These manuals give no re-torque mileage. The instruction is that “the wheel nuts should be tightened with a torque wrench to the proper torque specification after replacing” 2. Every edition warns: “Never use oil or grease on bolts or nuts because the nuts might come loose” 1. Earlier manuals word it as “studs or nuts” 6. Tighten in a star pattern and finish with a torque wrench (lug nut tightening guide).

Years we have not checked

We did not individually check the 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024 manuals. The years on either side agree. The 2026 gas Equinox manual link returned an error, so we have no 2026 figure yet. The Equinox EV is not covered. No Equinox owner’s manual gives an oil drain plug or brake caliper torque.
