How the Jeep models compare
Jeep’s line-up splits by stud size:
- M14 x 1.50, 22 mm socket, 130 ft-lb (176 N·m): the Wrangler JL from 2018 1 and the Grand Cherokee from 2014, including the WL, Grand Cherokee L and 4xe 2.
- M12 x 1.25, 19 mm socket, 100 ft-lb (135 N·m): the Cherokee KL in the 2016 and 2023 manuals 3 and the Compass MP in the 2020 manual 4. These two don’t have their own pages yet. The table above gives the latest value we checked.
The older big Jeeps are where the numbers differ. The JK Wrangler used 1/2” x 20 studs: 95 ft lbs (130 N·m) in the 2008–2013 manuals and 100 ft-lb (135 N·m) in 2016–2017. The Grand Cherokee was 95 ft lbs (130 N·m) in the 2010 WK and 110 ft lbs (150 N·m) in the 2011–2012 WK2, before reaching 130. A chart that gives one Wrangler value from 2011 to 2026 cannot be right for both the JK and the JL.
The JL also has a second spec. Its spare tire carrier on the swing gate is 59 ft-lb (80 N·m), not the road-wheel 130 1.
What the Jeep manuals say
The newer Jeep manuals put the torque in a table with stud and socket size, plus a note to use dealer-recommended nuts and “clean or remove any dirt or oil before tightening”. They add: “After 25 miles (40 km), check the lug nut/bolt torque to be sure that all the lug nuts/bolts are properly seated against the wheel” 1. The Ram 1500 comes from the same Mopar manual family and uses the same M14 x 1.50 thread at 130 ft-lb (176 N·m). No Jeep owner’s manual we read gives an oil drain plug or brake caliper torque. For the tightening order see the lug nut tightening guide.
