Ford Escape lug nut torque by year
Every Escape manual from 2007 to 2024 gives 100 ft-lb (135 N·m) on M12 x 1.5 studs. That covers the 2020-and-later gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The 2004 guide printed a range of 84-114 ft-lb (113-153 N·m) instead of a single value.

Values as printed in the manufacturer’s owner’s manual for the year shown, not converted. Years between two checked manuals of the same generation are assumed to share the value. Open a row to read the exact wording.
What the owner’s manual says
- Re-check: Retighten the lug nuts to the specified torque at 800 km (500 miles) after any wheel disturbance (tire rotation, changing a flat tire, wheel removal, etc.).
- Re-check: Retighten the lug nuts to the specified torque at 500 miles (800 km) after any wheel disturbance (tire rotation, changing a flat tire, wheel removal, etc.).
- Re-check: Retighten the lug nuts to the specified torque within 100 miles (160 km) after any wheel disturbance (tire rotation, changing a flat tire, wheel removal, etc.).
- Re-check: Retighten the lug nuts to the specified torque within 100 miles (160 kilometers) after any wheel disturbance (such as tire rotation, changing a flat tire, wheel removal).
- Re-check: Retighten the wheel nuts to the specified torque within 100 mi (160 km) after any wheel disturbance (such as tire rotation, changing a flat tire, wheel removal).
- Threads: Torque specifications are for nut and bolt threads free of dirt and rust. Use only Ford recommended replacement fasteners.
What changed between generations
The Escape is the most stable Ford here. All four generations use M12 x 1.5 studs, and the torque has been one number since the 2007 model year:
- 1st generation (2001–2007): the 2004 guide prints a range, 84-114 ft-lb (113-153 N·m) 3. The 2007 guide prints a single 100 ft-lb (135 N·m) 1.
- 2nd generation (2008–2012): 100 ft-lb (135 N·m) in the 2008 and 2012 guides 6 7.
- 3rd generation (2013–2019): 100 ft-lb (135 N·m) in the 2013, 2015 and 2019 manuals 5 8 9.
- 4th generation (2020 on): the 2020 manual covers Gas, HEV and PHEV models with one value, 100 ft-lb (135 N·m) 4. The 2024 manual after the 2023 refresh prints the same 2.
If you have a 2004 Escape and a range is not useful, the later single value falls inside it. Ford’s 2004 guide still says 84-114 ft-lb, so that is what we list for that year.
The Escape is smaller than the Explorer and F-150 in more than torque. It uses 12 mm studs, where those trucks moved to M14 x 1.5 at 150 ft-lb. Don’t carry a truck setting over to the Escape.
Re-check and thread condition
The re-check distance shrank over time. The 2004 guide says “at 800 km (500 miles)” and the 2007 and 2008 guides say “at 500 miles (800 km)” 3 6. From 2012 the wording is “within 100 miles (160 km) after any wheel disturbance” 7 2. Ford’s thread note is the same in every edition: torque specifications “are for nut and bolt threads free of dirt and rust.” Use a star pattern and a torque wrench for the final pass (how to tighten lug nuts).
Years we have not checked
The 2002 and 2003 Escape guides we opened print no lug torque, so for 2001–2003 we have no Ford figure. We have not found a 2025–2026 US Escape manual. The 2025 manual on Ford’s site is the New Zealand edition, which we do not use as a US source. No Escape owner’s manual lists an oil drain plug or brake caliper torque.
